Bridal or wedding showers are informal, fun-based parties thrown by the bride’s entourage for her closest female friends and family members. These are usually done before the wedding and coordinated by her bridesmaids.
Rumor has it that the bridal shower began in Holland when a certain Dutch girl from a wealthy family wanted to marry a poor man from the village. Her father was aghast at his daughter’s decision to marry despite his protests and refused to pay her dowry. Her friends and villagers then rallied around the couple and bought them enough goods for them to start their married life comfortably. How true this story is anybody’s guess.
There are varying differences to the story, like the poor girl’s family being unable to pay a dowry so her friends put together enough gifts to compensate for the lack of it.
No matter what the true story, the bridal shower tradition began then and now has evolved to be as much as part of the wedding festivities as the reception itself. Originally a purely Western concept, it has now crept into the Eastern cultures as well.
Keepsake From Bridal Showers
During a bridal shower, it is common for the guests to leave with a little keepsake of the party. Bridal shower favors are wonderful little trinkets that help remind guests of the fun they had with the bride without the constraints of formalities. Such favors should also keep in mind the theme of the shower, if there is one. Themes for bridal showers are aplenty – as varied as the wedding themes themselves. It is also not uncommon to see shower themes that are different from the wedding, just as it is also normal to see the same themes for both.
Some possible bridal shower favors are group or individual shots with bride-to-be. This is simple enough to do with an instant camera or express photo service nearby. Other easy and inexpensive bridal shower favors are chocolates in cute drawstring favor bags, mini bouquets of flowers, little lace napkins, photo frames with a picture of you and your guest in it or anything that is fun and personal.
Other wedding shower favors are silk fans, travel candles in tins, mint tins with mint or candy or wire place card holders. These are easy to find in either gift shops or ordered online. You can always personalize these gifts further with personalized ribbons and labels or attach a little handwritten Thank You note with your guest’s names on them.
A wedding shower favor that is not too costly is candles. Whether it is tea lights, mini candles or scented ones, all you need are candles and ribbons to tie around them. For a prettier presentation, choose colored candles and matching personalized ribbons so your wedding shower favor will have your personal touch.
Bridal Shower Favors Choices
Some interesting bridal shower favors include seedlings in a packet. These are perfect for fall wedding showers and environmentally friendly as well. These are real live seedlings which can be planted by your guests when they are home. As they see their plant grow, they are reminded with each blooming year of your celebration of love.
Other wedding shower favors to consider may be more radical and daring than others. Some brides in more liberal societies have even given out garter belts and lingerie as their wedding shower favors – which is seen as a good luck charm for the singles so they too can hopefully find their match in the near future. Of course, this very much depends on who is on your guest list and if giving such items would be offensive instead of fun.
You can even make your own wedding shower favors. Some things you may want to consider making for your guests are a CD compilation of all-time favorite love songs or a digital album on CD of you and those in your shower during various happy moments. For the digital album, make sure you put their names below each picture with a corresponding happy memory so everyone will know when and what the occasion was.
Other bridal shower favors you can make are potpourri. Buy a potpourri kit from any gift or scent shop. Then purchase some colored satin or tulle material in bulk (often cheaper) so you can cut them up into packets. Tie each packet up with a matching colored ribbon and attach a little Thank You tag on it as a personal touch. This is one of the easiest DIY favors you can make which is both inexpensive and quick to do.
As bridal showers are often small, cozy gatherings of friends, favors are often informal, fun and sometimes intimate, but always meaningful.
